KILROY STARS

Conceived amidst the pandemic to illuminate and connect cities in the Western US, the Kilroy Stars are a series of beacon-like monumental light sculptures installed within the city skyline.

Each of these installations of light and movement is a steel dodecahedron form that spans 20 feet in diameter and contains over 30,000 individually programmable LED lights. The Kilroy Stars illuminate and oscillate in rhythmic patterns visible from miles away.

Initially intended for temporary exhibition in a rotating roster of Western cities, by 2024 the stars were retrofitted and permanently installed at Kilroy Realty properties in Austin, Long Beach, Seattle, and San Diego.

These 12-sided beauties feature custom support tripods and inner steel cores, but the project’s main logistical challenge was attaching the sculptures to four unique structures using a combination of mechanical maneuvering and individualized structural solutions. The result is a spectacular illuminated flourish to the nighttime city skylines.
