Oakland, Calif.-based artist Sean Orlando will create a permanent artwork for Fire Station 32 in the West Seattle Junction. The new fire station will be built at the existing location, 3715 W. Alaska St., and will be the lead station for Battalion VII, which covers all of West Seattle, southwest Seattle, Harbor Island and the industrial areas lining both sides of the Duwamish River. The fire station is expected to be completed in fall 2015.

Orlando is an installation artist and community organizer with an interest in collaborative and immersive, large-scale sculptural installation projects. He is a co-founder of the Five Ton Crane Arts Group and principle artist at Engineered Artworks. Orlando’s most recent collaborative group projects include the Steampunk Tree House, Raygun Gothic Rocketship and The Nautilus Submarine art car. His area of expertise includes the design and fabrication of large-scale public sculpture and leading collaborative teams to bring to life high-profile aesthetic visions that celebrate human ingenuity and exploration. He’s exhibited at venues throughout California including Port of San Francisco, Coachella, Chabot Space and Science Center, Burning Man and Worth Ryder Gallery.

A panel of arts professionals, Department of Finance and Administrative Services (DFAS) representatives, a firefighter, West Seattle community members and fire station architects selected Orlando. The project is commissioned with DFAS 1% for Art funds.

“Five Ton Crane (5TC) is a group of “artists, geeks, and inventors” from the San Francisco Bay Area. As they describe their own work: “5TC does the heavy lifting that the individual artist couldn’t do on his own; by pooling resources, interests, and talent to create opportunities for bigger, better and bolder Art.

10 Wild Art Cars From Burning Man
In late August, a community of more than 50,000 like-minded folks gathers for a week in the Black Rock Desert in northern Nevada for the annual Burning Man festival. Cars are not allowed as transport in this temporary small city, yet art cars called Mutant Vehicles are encouraged and even funded by a Burning Man foundation. These cars carry people and put on shows at less than 15 mph, and like the festival itself, they’re about radical self-expression.

The 9000-pound Nautilus is inspired by Jules Verne’s submarine from Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. Its base is a 2005 Eagle TT8 diesel airport tug with four-wheel drive.

Californians Christopher and Amber Marie Bently conceived the idea; Sean Orlando & Five Ton Crane, creators of art sculptures in the San Francisco Bay area, built it. The Nautilus is 25 feet long and 12 feet tall and made of laser-welded steel with decorative rivets lining the hull. The engine and steering controls are on the “bridge” of the machine. The Nautilus features surround sound, a library, a map room, and a full bar.

Deep in West Oakland, a collective of artists called Five Ton Crane (5TC) is hard at work tuning up their submarine. Although it doesn’t go underwater, there seems to be little else this lifesize vessel can’t do—it even defends its perimeters with a water spear gun and bumps tunes from its built-in iPad technology. It’s structured with all the romantic details of retro-futurism–that is, modeling art after old school design, and then amplifying it with futuristic technology. When the artists, who recently returned from Burning Man, need to take a break, they head inside the sub to a spot they’ve dubbed “the make-out room” and sip from a vintage bottle in the mini-bar.

“We aim to be, rather than to seem,” said Sean Orlando, one of the lead artists of the Nautilus, who says his favorite spot is in the captain’s chair. “It’s important for us, with these large projects, that they remain immersive and interactive, and that people can climb around in them, drive around in them.”

This is the third large-scale installation Five Ton Crane has made. In 2007 they constructed a Tree House, and in 2009 they built the Raygun Gothic Rocketship, which is currently on display along San Francisco’s Embarcadero waterfront. The group gets its funding from private donations, and the staff are volunteers, making their childhood dreams of tree houses, rockets, and submarines a reality.

“All the things that people see in print but actually can’t imagine—we flesh them out,” Five Ton Crane artist Jay Kravitz said. “We make big toys for adults to play with.”
