Entomological Dangler- New Work in Progress

This is a new kinetic piece that I’m working on for the upcoming Five Ton Crane Group art show on March 5th, 2010.

The gears were given to me many years ago and have been sitting around the shop forever. I’ve always had it in my mind to assemble them in some way. It’ll operate by turning a simple crank mechanism by hand. The idea is to connect long thin wires to each gear with hand made moths connected to the end of each wire. As the gears turn, the moths will fly around a single bare light bulb hanging from the ceiling.

… Engineered Artworks?

An engineer is a person who is professionally engaged in a field of engineering. Engineers are concerned with developing economical and safe solutions to practical problems, by applying mathematics and scientific knowledge while considering technical constraints.[1][2] As such, the work of engineers is the link between perceived needs of society and commercial applications.

Some consider this profession to be the link between art and science.
